Nukporfe African Dance and Drumming Ensemble to perform

Binghamton University’s Nukporfe African Dance and Drumming Ensemble, directed by Associate Professor James Burns, will perform at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 8, in FA-Watters Theater. The presentation will include African music performed by a full ensemble of drummers and dancers. African dance-drumming typically juxtaposes several art forms together including storytelling, pantomime, oral history and community wisdom. Tickets are $3 per person and can be purchased at the door.

Ethnic Geography Workshop Thursday – April 25

The Ethnic Geography Workshop, sponsored by the Harpur College Dean’s Speaker Series, will take place from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Thursday, April 25, in SW-206. The workshop, titled “Puerto Rico; A Geographical Gateway of the Caribbean,” will be led by Professor Carlos Guilbe of the University of Puerto Rico. Also, come and learn about the study abroad program to Puerto Rico, taking place in January 2014. This lecture is free and open to the public.

North Korea’s prison campus system topic of talk – April 26

New York Times best-selling author Blaine Harden will discuss his book, “Escape from Camp 14,” about the story of Shin Dong-Hyuk and the political prison camp system in North Korea at 7 p.m. Friday, April 26, in LH-2. Supported by various cultural student groups including THiNK (Tomorrow’s Hope in North Korea), KASA (Korean American Student Association), Amnesty International, Pi Delta Psi Fraternity and Asian Outlook. President builds relations in China, South Korea, Hong Kong

Binghamton University’s ideal Asian partners include companies, other universities, high schools, governments and alumni.

So it was only natural that President Harvey Stenger’s recent trip abroad would be spent connecting with University partners in all these categories in China, Korea and Hong Kong.

“We were trying to make strategic, personal, deep and focused relationships with entities who make ideal partners,” said Stenger, who visited Asia for 10 days at the end of March.

The trip began in South Korea, where Stenger was accompanied by Bahgat Sammakia, vice president for research; Krishnaswami “Hari” Srihari, dean of the Thomas J. Watson School of Engineering and Applied Science; Seungbae “S.B.” Park, associate professor of mechanical engineering; Daryl Santos, professor and director of the Integrated Electronics Engineering Center; and Amanda Bailor, international alumni and career connections coordinator for Watson.

The group visited Samsung Techwin, a $3 billion/year safety- and energy-solutions corporation founded in 1977. Park’s work with Samsung Techwin CEO Cheol Kyo Kim opened the door for a Binghamton-Samsung partnership – a partnership made even stronger when the two sides agreed to a student internship program at the company in which 10 Binghamton students will spend their summer at Samsung in a fully paid internship. The agreement is for a five-year period and this year’s announcement had already attracted 75 applicants for the program.

“This important division of a world-famous company has picked us as the first university to create this kind of relationship,” Stenger said.

Israel Independence Day celebration on Tuesday, April 16

Hillel at Binghamton presents Yom Ha’atzmaut – Israel’s Independence Day — from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday, April 16 in the Mandela Room and Old Union Hall. The event will be themed around the vibrant Israeli market place, the shuk. Come eat some shwarma, pita, falafel, shnitzel, Israeli salads, Aroma iced coffee and many other Middle Eastern foods. Among the activities available will be a henna station, jewelry and candle-making, a Dead Sea spa and inflatables. Enjoy the music of the Israeli band, The Shuk, while relaxing in an authentic Bedouin tent. Admission is free and the authentic Israeli dinner will cost $5 for students and $7 for faculty, staff and community members.

Symposium on Korean pop music Friday, April 12

The Center for Korean Studies and the program in the Department of Asian American Studies invite the campus community to the annual Korean/Korean Studies Symposium, “Hallyu America! The Global Flow of K-Pop” from 1:30-5:30 p.m. Friday, April 12, in FA-258.

Scholars Roald Maliangkay (Australian National University), JungBong Choi (NYU), Mary Yu Danico (Cal Poly Pomona), Crystal Anderson (Elon University) and Sharon Heijin Lee (NYU) will discuss various topics pertaining to the Korean pop music and culture phenomenon and its implications in the U.S. Light refreshments will be served. Holocaust Remembrance Day Ceremony to be Held at Binghamton University

Hillel at Binghamton will host its annual community Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day) memorial ceremony and 25-hour name reading beginning at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, April 7, in the AC-Chamber Hall. All members of the Greater Binghamton community are invited to join this special event.

Student descendants of survivors, faculty and members of the local Jewish clergy will speak. Following the ceremony, students will commence the 25-hour name reading of Holocaust survivors. A tent to accommodate the name readings will be set up outside the University Union along with a database of victims’ biographies.
