Students Speak to the Libraries

The Libraries provided students with colorful markers and blank bookmarks, and asked them to write how the Libraries have helped them with their research. The most popular comments highlighted the Libraries research resources, including subject librarians, study space, and friendly and knowledgeable library staff (especially Judy at the Information Desk). Hockey in Broome County is Special Collections Featured Book for May 2013

In honor of the Stanley Cup playoffs, Hockey in Broome County (2005) is Special Collections’ Featured Book for May 2013. The Binghamton Senators, AHL-affiliate and farm team for the Ottawa Senators, may not have gotten far in the Caldor Cup playoffs but you can still read all about Broome County hockey in this book!

Written by Marvin A. Cohen and Michael J. McCann and part of our Local History Collection, this book covers hockey in our county from the Broome Dusters through the Binghamton Senators. An exhibition game attended by 4,620 fans played in the new Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena in September of 1973 followed by a newly formed Broome Dusters team of the North American Hockey League started a love affair with hockey in Broome County.

The Dusters were followed by the Binghamton Whalers (AHL), the Binghamton Rangers (AHL), the B.C. Icemen (IHL), and, currently the Binghamton Senators (AHL). Hockey in Broome County follows this history with more than 200 photographs and engaging text. Relive the heroics of the Dusters’ Rod Bloomfield, “the little guy that everyone picked on.” Then skip ahead to the crowd-pleasing toughness of the Whalers’ Randy MacGregor and the more recent brilliance of the Senators’ Jason Spezza.

Library End-of-Semester Extended Hours

The Libraries have end-of-semester extended hours to accommodate study and research needs in preparation for finals. Our extended hours are:

Bartle Library and the Information Commons will be open 24 hours from April 28 through May 16, 2013.

UDC Library will extend hours until midnight from Friday, May 10 to Tuesday, May 14.

Science Library will extend hours on Friday, May 10 until 10pm and Saturday, May 11, 12-9 pm.

Faculty and Teaching Assistants: The Libraries’ Instructional Services Coordinating Committee is conducting a university-wide survey to gain insight on how Binghamton University students do research and how research practices evolve as students progress through the University. The Committee would greatly appreciate your help.

Finding and Using Ebooks

Did you know that the Libraries have ebooks that you can read anywhere and download to your mobile device? The Libraries’ Finding and Using Ebooks webpage provides information on ebook packages available at the Libraries (e.g. EBSCOhost eBook Collection, Eighteenth Century Collections Online, Safari Books Online), freely available ebook collections, and provides tips for locating ebook titles in the Library Catalog and Find It! The Finding and Using Ebooks webpage also shows how you can download ebooks to your mobile devices (e.g. iOS & Android, Kindle, Nook, Sony and Epub Devices). Exam Week Stress? The Libraries Can Help

The end of the semester is quickly approaching and that means it’s crunch time for papers and exams. The Libraries have a variety of services available to help you find scholarly resources such as books and journal articles. We also offer several tools to help you conduct research more effectively and efficiently.

Find It! is a search tool for books, journals, articles, videos, sound recordings, digital images and more. The single search box retrieves ranked results from the Libraries’ Catalog and Digital Collections as well an aggregated index of scholarly electronic resources.

Subject Guides provide access to relevant databases, journals and web resources for a particular discipline.

The Research Project Calculator helps you plan the time needed to work on an assignment.

RefWorks is a online tool that formats in-text citations and creates bibliographies in citation styles such as a APA and MLA.

As always, you can Ask a Librarian for research assistance. We are available in person, by phone, by text and online via chat or Skype.

Don’t forget to check out the libraries hours during reading/exam week.

Summer Course Reserves

The Reserves Staff would like to remind you to submit Course Reserve requests at your earliest convenience. All requests are processed in the order in which they are received. The Reserves Staff do not automatically turn around materials from previous semesters without written notification.

To ensure your list will be processed by the first day of classes for Term I & II of Summer 2013, we recommend that you submit your list(s) on or before May 5, 2013.

For those of you already preparing for Fall, we recommend that you submit your list(s) on or before August 5, 2013.
