Subject: Journal Subscription Cancellations for 2010
As each of you is aware, our University is coping with significant budgetary challenges. Despite strong support from the University Administration to limit our library budget’s exposure to crippling reductions, we must cancel $100,000 in scholarly journal subscriptions for the 2010 calendar year.
During FY 2008-09 our libraries absorbed a budget reduction of $100,000 as well as the increased cost of existing journal subscriptions by utilizing lapsed salary from vacant positions and IFR funds. (We were the only SUNY doctoral center library to avoid journal cancellations during 2009.) For FY 2009-10, we must cut an additional $320,000 from our budget and cope with anticipated inflationary expenses of $269,175 (5% on monographs; 7.6% on journals; and 2.0% on electronic databases). I believe the library can absorb most of these budget reductions and additional expenses by eliminating vacant staff positions and spending our remaining IFR funds. However, we need your assistance in canceling $100,000 of journal subscriptions to successfully balance the library budget.
Library bibliographers will be contacting each academic department to identify titles proposed for cancellation. The proposed cancellation list will be shared with the campus community before any action is taken. Our desire is to work with all concerned parties to minimize disruptions to research and curricular programs. Thank you for collaborating with us in this difficult, but necessary, endeavor.
